Day 1

Melbourne to Great Ocean Road

Depart: Melbourne

O/night: Apollo Bay

Distance: 179 kilometres

Route summary: From Melbourne take the Princes Freeway via Werribee to Geelong, gateway to the Great Ocean Road. Visit the You Yangs Regional Park to view koalas in the wild before heading to the Surf Coast towns of Torquay and Lorne. Drive the magical stretch of road from Lorne to Apollo Bay that clings to the coastline.

Day 2

Great Ocean Road to Grampians

Depart: Apollo Bay

O/night: Halls Gap/Dunkeld

Distance: Approx 351 kilometres

Route summary: From Apollo Bay, follow the Great Ocean Road through the lush Otways to the Twelve Apostles, take a helicopter ride for a breathtaking view of the dramatic coastline. Travel on to Warrnambool, stopping at Tower Hill to experience aboriginal culture and wildlife before heading to Halls Gap or Dunkeld.

Day 3

Grampians to Ballarat

Depart: Halls Gap/Dunkeld

O/night: Ballarat

Distance: Approx 152 kilometres

Route summary: Stop in Halls Gap the heart of the Grampians National Park to experience aboriginal culture and ancient rock art. Head through Australian bush country towards Stawell, then Ararat before arriving in Ballarat, the city of gold. After enjoying dinner in one of our culturally diverse and cosmopolitan restaurants, discover the Eureka story at the Blood on the Southern Cross sound and light show, where gold rush history meets modern technology. Following the show check into one of the city’s stunning historic hotels for a well deserved rest.

Day 4

Ballarat to Melbourne

Depart: Ballarat

O/night: Melbourne

Distance: 113 kilometres

Route summary: Before enjoying a walk around Lake Wendouree take a stroll along historic Lydiard Street to admire the Victorian inspired architecture of the gold rush. Then before heading back to Melbourne, take some time out to have your photo taken with a koala or feed a kangaroo at the open range Ballarat Wildlife Park.
